UAMS Internal Medicine is the only academic medical center program in Arkansas, functioning as the state's primary referral center for subspecialty care while training residents jointly at UAMS Hospital and the Central Arkansas Veterans Health Care System. The program is intermediate-sized and structured around collegiality and continuity, with a stated goal of producing broadly competent internists prepared for any career path rather than steering residents toward a single track. Research is available and supported through pairing with faculty across 10+ fellowship divisions and access to the UAMS Translational Research Institute, but it functions as an offered resource rather than a mandated pillar of training.
