Program Identity & Fit

Olive View-UCLA is a county safety-net hospital-based categorical and preliminary Internal Medicine program, UCLA-sponsored and staffed by over 90 UCLA-appointed faculty, serving a predominantly Spanish-speaking, under-resourced population of over 2 million in northern LA County with nearly 80% outpatient continuity. The program builds general medicine competency across three health systems (county hospital, Mid-Valley community clinic, Ronald Reagan/Santa Monica UCLA, West LA VA) while explicitly preparing residents for either subspecialty fellowship or general/hospitalist practice, reflected in strong fellowship placement and active hospitalist recruitment of graduates. Scholarship is faculty-mentored and accessible (NIH grants, health services research, QI, resident-led publications/abstracts) rather than mandatory, and the program has formalized non-clinical career pathways through named tracks: Healthcare Leadership & Advocacy, Medical Education, and a joint Primary Care track with UCLA/Santa Clarita. Distinctive identity elements include an explicit anti-racism/social determinants curriculum, an Inclusive Excellence (REACH) initiative addressing immigrant, refugee, and LGBTQ+ health, and county-hospital procedural/diagnostic autonomy from intern year onward with undifferentiated pathology.
