New York Medical College-St. Mary and St. Clare Program

Program Identity & Fit

This is a large, community-based internal medicine program (126 residents, 20 PGY1 positions) sponsored by New York Medical College and run across a consortium of three hospitals in New Jersey—St. Mary's General in urban Passaic and Saint Clare's in suburban Denville/Dover. The dual-site structure is the program's defining feature, deliberately exposing residents to contrasting patient populations: an underserved, acute-care-heavy urban population with limited access to primary care at St. Mary's, versus an informed, engaged, prevention-oriented suburban population at Saint Clare's. Research is present through Research Day and journal club but is woven into a broadly clinical, service-based curriculum rather than positioned as a defining institutional priority. The program frames itself around mentorship, clinical autonomy balanced with structured learning, and developing well-rounded internists ready for community practice or fellowship, rather than emphasizing a narrow academic or physician-scientist track.
