MUSC's Internal Medicine Residency is a large (100+ resident) university-based program built around three tightly clustered downtown Charleston sites—the tertiary/quaternary MUSC Main University Hospital, Ashley River Tower, and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center—giving trainees exposure to complex subspecialty inpatient services (hepatology, malignant hematology, cardiology) alongside a structured continuity-clinic panel model with shared "Color Team" coverage. The program is explicit about balancing inpatient and outpatient exposure (no more than two consecutive inpatient months, weekends off on non-ward rotations) and about building career-tailored electives (Global Health, Health Disparities, POCUS, Quality Improvement, Hospitalist), reflecting an identity oriented toward producing well-rounded internists who can pursue any path rather than funneling toward a single outcome. Research is resident-initiated rather than mandatory—an elective block with mentorship that frequently culminates in presentations at MUSC Research Day or national meetings—supported by institution-wide infrastructure (SCTR, MSCR, MPH) for those who want to pursue it further. The program's PRIME division and pathway/mentorship infrastructure signal a stated institutional value on mentoring trainees from varied backgrounds and on service to South Carolina's population, alongside procedural/ICU training (closed MICU, VA ICU, CICU elective) that supports both hospitalist and subspecialty fellowship trajectories.
