Henry Ford Hospital's Internal Medicine program is a large, historic (est. 1915) academic residency anchored at a quaternary-care, transplant, and level 1 trauma flagship hospital in Detroit, serving a medically complex, underserved, and ethnically/socioeconomically diverse population drawn from statewide transfers. The program is structured around graded autonomy toward independent practice, with a required intern-year research and procedural foundation (ESIM, POCUS longitudinal curriculum, Procedure & Code Blue rotation) and a strong subspecialty fellowship pipeline (13 in-house fellowships spanning cardiology, GI, hem-onc, ID, nephrology, pulm/critical care, and more). Scholarly activity is expected of every resident (not optional), supported by dedicated research infrastructure (statisticians, data analysts, medical writers, travel funding), while parallel tracks exist for those oriented toward medical education (HIEE curriculum) or primary/ambulatory care (GOAT, Patient Centered Medical Home). The program values self-directed customization of the PGY2-3 elective schedule toward a chosen fellowship or career path, high procedural competence, and comfort managing acute, high-acuity, and rare pathology in a fast-paced tertiary/quaternary safety-net environment.
