Program Identity & Fit

East Alabama Health's Internal Medicine Residency is a community-based, hospital-employed program at a 316-bed acute-care center serving Opelika/Auburn and nine surrounding rural counties, giving residents broad inpatient and outpatient exposure without the layered subspecialty complexity of a quaternary academic center. The curriculum follows a structured 4+2+2 block model with required exposure to all seven core IM subspecialties plus radiology, geriatrics, neurology, emergency medicine and quality improvement, and offers PGY-2 tracks in inpatient, outpatient, and fellowship-oriented pathways. Scholarly activity is structured but not identity-defining: a dedicated PGY-2 QI block, a faculty research mentor for each resident, an annual Research Week, and a steady output of case reports/QI abstracts (with some residents reaching national conferences and peer-reviewed publication) support residents pursuing fellowship without positioning the program as research-intensive. The program values team-based clinical leadership and community engagement, and its graduates go on to both community/hospitalist practice and competitive subspecialty fellowships.
