Program Identity & Fit

Bayhealth is a young (founded 2021), community-based internal medicine residency in Dover, Delaware, built around an X+Y schedule with no 24-hour call, serving a rapidly growing, underserved population across its Kent and Sussex campuses and a dedicated Milford ambulatory practice in a designated physician shortage area. The program offers a distinct Categorical Track and Primary Care Track, with the latter emphasizing longitudinal panel continuity, dedicated primary care mentorship, and preparation for community-based outpatient practice; both tracks front-load subspecialty exposure by end of PGY-2 to inform fellowship decisions and allow individualized PGY-3 electives tailored to hospitalist, subspecialty, or primary care goals. The program has launched its own Hematology/Oncology and Gastroenterology fellowships and explicitly aims to retain graduates locally as hospitalists or community physicians, signaling a career orientation split between local workforce development and fellowship placement. Structurally the program values residents who fit its explicit mission of serving Kent/Sussex County Delaware, embrace continuity-based, community-oriented care, and engage in research/quality projects supported by protected elective time.
