Program Identity & Fit

An unopposed community-based residency sponsored by St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Edgewood, Kentucky, in the Greater Cincinnati area, with ten residents per year for a complement of thirty. Inpatient training is concentrated on the Edgewood campus, a hospital of more than 500 beds with medical, surgical and cardiac intensive care units, a Family Birth Place, and a Level III neonatal unit staffed by Cincinnati Children's neonatologists. Continuity care runs through the Center for Family Medicine on the same campus. First-year blocks include ten weeks of adult inpatient medicine, eight of ambulatory pediatrics, six of obstetrics, four of emergency medicine and four of surgery, with upper years adding cardiology, critical care and medical subspecialties. The program uses night float rather than overnight call and provides weekly four-hour year-group didactics, daily noon conferences, quality improvement projects and nursing home rounds. The health system also offers hospice and palliative medicine and obstetrics fellowships.
