Program Identity & Fit

This is a longstanding, community-oriented family medicine program based at Ochsner University Hospital & Clinics in Lafayette, Louisiana, with a mission centered on comprehensive, full-spectrum primary care for a broad public and charity-care population across hospital, private-office, and nursing home settings. The curriculum emphasizes breadth over subspecialization: continuity obstetrics, GI endoscopy training, nursing home and hospice/palliative care, and a distinctive sports medicine track with team physician roles for Division I collegiate and high school athletics. Scholarly activity exists at the level of case reports and regional conference presentations rather than as a driving institutional priority, and the program's close ties to its own Geriatric Medicine and Sports Medicine fellowships support graduates pursuing further training, though the majority of alumni remain in Southwestern Louisiana for full-scope rural or community practice. The program values broadly trained, community-committed physicians who can function autonomously across acute, chronic, obstetric, and geriatric care in varied and resource-limited settings.
