Program Identity & Fit

Cooper's Family Medicine Residency is a university-affiliated, urban safety-net program based in Camden, NJ, at South Jersey's leading academic medical center, serving a medically complex, underserved population within a health system undergoing major expansion (Project Imagine). The program's identity centers on full-scope family medicine—inpatient, ambulatory, obstetrics, and urgent/emergency care—paired with an unusually granular set of concentration tracks (Family Planning, Addiction Medicine, Palliative Care, Marginalized Communities, Health Informatics, Media and Advocacy, among others) chosen in PGY-1, allowing residents to build a high-volume niche within generalist training. Faculty interests emphasize care of marginalized and vulnerable populations, substance use disorder, reproductive health, and health equity, reflecting a community-embedded, advocacy-oriented mission rather than a subspecialty-fellowship pipeline. Research exists (institutional clinical trials infrastructure, QI projects) but is not positioned as central; the program instead values applicants drawn to community medicine, whole-person continuity care, and social determinants-focused practice.
