Program Identity & Fit

Boston Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency, sponsored by Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, is built around New England's largest safety-net hospital, where roughly 57-73% of patients come from low-income, under-resourced, and immigrant/refugee backgrounds requiring interpretation in 30+ languages. The program explicitly frames itself around health equity, social justice, and social determinants of health, training residents to work across the Boston HealthNet network of 13 affiliated community health centers rather than solely within the hospital. More than half of graduates go on to practice in underserved settings or federally designated shortage areas, indicating a mission-driven, community-oriented rather than subspecialty-fellowship pipeline, though the department maintains an active research/scholarship infrastructure (Global Health Collaborative, Breastfeeding Equity Center) supporting inquiry alongside clinical training.
