Baylor University Medical Center's dermatology residency is a community-based program embedded within a large, faith-founded, not-for-profit quaternary health system, combining high-volume general and surgical dermatology exposure with academic-style didactics and one-on-one faculty instruction. Residents rotate through Mohs surgery, dermatopathology, pediatric and rheumatologic dermatology, and staff a longitudinal continuity clinic serving underserved and underinsured populations, alongside a resident-run PGY4 clinic offering full-ownership patient care. Research is structurally required (one publication and a quality-improvement project annually) but not positioned as the program's central identity; rather, the program emphasizes producing well-rounded clinicians capable of both academic appointment and independent community practice. Its faculty hold leadership roles in dermatologic societies, and the program explicitly values graduated resident autonomy, breadth of medical dermatology, and complexity of surgical/oncologic dermatology exposure via tumor board and cancer center integration.
