VCU's Dorothy A. Pauley Department of Urology is a university-affiliated academic program in downtown Richmond that recently became a standalone department, reflecting institutional investment in expanding its clinical, educational and research footprint (it grew from two to three residents per class as of 2022). The program integrates VCU Medical Center, Children's Hospital of Richmond, VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Richmond VA Health System, giving residents broad subspecialty exposure across pediatric urology, urologic oncology, reconstructive urology, neuro-urology/voiding dysfunction, and men's sexual health. Research is structurally embedded rather than optional, with four dedicated months in PGY-3 supported by translational and engineering collaborations (e.g., mechano-urology with the College of Engineering) and a track record of resident publications feeding top fellowships and competitive jobs. The department's three-pillar mission (compassionate care, education, research) and its emphasis on team science, faculty mentorship, and disparities/quality-improvement work suggest it values residents who engage seriously with scholarly inquiry alongside clinical training.
