The University of Toledo Urology program is a five-year academic residency, established in 1950, that builds its clinical identity around a rare and distinctive capability: resident participation in renal transplantation, one of only 15 U.S. urology programs where this occurs. Training spans three affiliated hospitals with over 25 faculty, offering broad exposure to general urology, oncology, reconstructive urology, infertility/andrology (with an onsite fertility lab and microsurgery-trained attendings), and heavy robotic volume via at least eight da Vinci Xi systems, most dual-console for early hands-on resident involvement. The R1 year is structured with six months of general surgery (including SICU, plastics, colorectal) before transitioning into dedicated urology training, and the program emphasizes continuity of care, strong board pass rates, and above-average in-service scores. Graduate outcomes overwhelmingly show placement into private and community urology practice, particularly in the Toledo/Ohio region and Midwest, indicating a program oriented toward producing clinically capable general and reconstructive/oncologic urologists for practice rather than academic career tracks.
