Program Identity & Fit

This is a five-year, university-affiliated urology program based at Erlanger Health System, the sole academic medical center within a 70+ mile region of Southeastern Tennessee, giving residents high-volume, high-acuity exposure to advanced and often untreated urologic disease in an underserved, safety-net population. The program is fellowship-faculty-dense (eight of nine attendings fellowship-trained) with subspecialty depth in robotic/laparoscopic surgery, endourology, oncology, reconstruction, prosthetics, male infertility, and pediatric urology across two clinical sites, and has established in-house post-residency fellowships in robotic/laparoscopic surgery and men's health medicine and surgery. Research is structured but service-embedded: quarterly research conferences, a dedicated PGY-2 research month, mandatory resident projects with expected presentation and publication, and active involvement in device/technology trials (early Da Vinci SP adopter, Urolift and penile implant centers of excellence). The program explicitly states it prepares residents for both academic and community practice and values strong academic performance, clear communication, teamwork, operative enthusiasm, leadership, prior work experience, and applicants who have overcome personal hardship.
