UMMC's Urology program is the only academic urology residency in Mississippi, situated within the state's sole academic medical center and Level I trauma referral system, giving residents a monopoly on the state's complex and varied urologic pathology. The five-year, two-resident-per-year structure emphasizes one-on-one faculty mentorship, with training spanning open surgery and robotic/minimally invasive techniques including the da Vinci system. Scholarly activity is woven into the curriculum through weekly conferences, journal club, and visiting professorships, with the stated aim of preparing graduates equally well for fellowship or academic careers. As the singular statewide referral point, the program appears to value residents who can function with significant clinical responsibility across a broad case mix in a resource-limited state system.
