University of Michigan Health-West's Urological Surgery Residency is a five-year community-based osteopathic-heritage program in Wyoming, MI, established in 1979 and now affiliated with the University of Michigan and Michigan State University's Statewide Campus System. The program offers graduated surgical autonomy from PGY-1 through chief year, a weekly resident-run continuity clinic at the Community Health Center, and a curriculum spanning hospital, office, clinic and rural urology settings across adult and pediatric populations. Research is structurally supported (institutional IRB, Protocol Review Committee, CITI training, monthly journal club) but the program's own language frames it as a supplement to clinical/surgical training rather than a defining mission, with graduates historically entering solo practice, group practice, academic medicine, and fellowship in roughly comparable measure. The program values well-rounded clinical/surgical competence, steady progression of responsibility, and engagement with community-based patient care rather than a narrow academic or subspecialty identity.
