The University of Kansas Department of Urology is an academic, university-affiliated program with a distinguished faculty lineage (including past AUA presidents) that trains both academically-oriented and private-practice urologists across a five-year categorical curriculum. The program offers two distinct tracks - a four-resident Traditional track and a separate one-resident Rural track - reflecting an explicit institutional commitment to preparing urologists for underserved rural practice alongside standard academic training. Residents complete a dedicated two-to-three-month research block and are expected to actively publish and present, supported by active basic-science and translational laboratories (bladder cancer, male infertility/contraception, female pelvic medicine) and departmental funding; graduates have gone on to fellowships at major national centers such as MSKCC, MD Anderson, Mayo, and Johns Hopkins. The program values a balance of high surgical volume with solid ambulatory/nonoperative clinical exposure, and structures its selection around performance metrics, urology-specific letters, and a personal statement reviewed by faculty across a half-day interview format.
