Cook County Health's Urology program is a five-year, safety-net-based training pathway rooted in the nation's oldest public hospital system, explicitly built around caring for a medically underserved Cook County population while producing "autonomous and competent surgeons." Training spans multiple sites - John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital for high-acuity county care, Christ Hospital for robotic and FPMRS exposure, Provident Hospital, and a dedicated Northwestern rotation in male sexual/reproductive health - giving residents broad exposure to general urology, oncology, endourology, reconstructive surgery, and pediatric urology without being organized around a formal research track. Graduate outcomes are overwhelmingly community and private practice, with only intermittent fellowships (reconstructive, andrology, robotics/MIS) and rare academic placement, indicating the program is oriented toward producing clinically versatile general urologists rather than subspecialist-researchers. The program's mission language, its historical tie to Provident Hospital's legacy of Black physician training, and its emphasis on reducing urologic health disparities point to a values-driven, service-oriented identity rather than a research- or prestige-driven one.
