Program Identity & Fit

This is a five-year community-based urology residency spanning three major Akron-area institutions—Cleveland Clinic Akron General, Summa Health, and Akron Children's Hospital—giving residents a broad community and pediatric hospital experience under the Cleveland Clinic system umbrella rather than a single tertiary academic center. The curriculum builds deliberately from general surgery and general urology foundations toward progressive subspecialty exposure (pediatric urology, FPMRS, andrology, reconstruction) and robotic surgery, including experience at a satellite private-practice site, reflecting a design meant to produce graduates competent for either immediate community practice or fellowship. Clinical research is encouraged rather than mandated, with protected Wednesday academic time, journal clubs, and conference travel support, but the program's own framing (graduates "competent to start practice the next day," roughly half pursuing fellowship) signals a practice-readiness identity rather than a research-driven one. Faculty coverage of all urologic subspecialties plus a low-cost, tight-knit Akron setting are presented as core distinguishing features supporting hands-on surgical autonomy.
