Program Identity & Fit

This is a highly competitive, university-affiliated Transitional Year program jointly run by Dell Medical School's Internal Medicine and Pediatrics departments, training six residents per year from roughly 900 applicants across a broad rotation base spanning internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, emergency medicine, neurology/psychiatry and critical care. Clinical training occurs at Dell Seton Medical Center (a socially-recognized safety-net teaching hospital) and Dell Children's Medical Center, the region's only Level 1 pediatric trauma center, giving residents exposure to acute, undifferentiated and pediatric-emergent presentations. The curriculum builds in a required scholarly project, a mandatory research elective block, and quality-improvement exposure, reflecting Dell Med's broader identity as a newly established academic health system embedded in a major research university invested in systems-level health innovation. The program frames itself as preparing generalist foundations for residents heading into competitive subspecialty training, valuing work ethic, adaptability across disciplines, and a team-cohort learning culture rather than early specialization.
