Program Identity & Fit

This is a Rutgers-sponsored, community-based Transitional Year program at Community Medical Center, a 592-bed acute care hospital in Toms River, NJ, structured explicitly around advanced placement pipelines rather than as a standalone PGY-1 year. Nine of sixteen positions are linked to Rutgers PGY-2+ programs in Diagnostic Radiology, Interventional Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Neurology, and PM&R, and even unlinked residents overwhelmingly advance into competitive specialties (radiology, dermatology, anesthesiology, radiation oncology) at strong academic centers. The curriculum is deliberately flexible, offering the most elective weeks of any TY program (16 weeks) alongside core IM, ICU, EM, and surgery blocks, so PGY-1 training can be tailored to a resident's already-secured PGY-2 specialty. Scholarly activity is required but modest (a dedicated 2-week block plus expected quality/clinical/educational projects), positioning research as a supportive rather than defining feature; the program's core value is a smooth, low-friction bridge into a chosen advanced specialty rather than broad primary-care or generalist development.
