Riverside Regional Medical Center's Transitional Year is a community-based program embedded in a large regional health system in southeastern Virginia, explicitly structured as a launching pad into competitive specialty residencies rather than a terminal training year. Its graduate outcomes are heavily concentrated in Radiology and Dermatology, with additional placements in Radiation Oncology, PM&R, and Anesthesia, and the elective menu (interventional neurology, POCUS, radiation oncology with Gamma Knife/SBRT, vascular surgery, dermatology at a VAMC with Mohs exposure) is deliberately curated to build specialty-specific portfolios for these tracks. The program treats TY residents identically to categoricals on rotations and supports continued research projects during elective time for those pursuing research-heavy fields like Radiation Oncology, reflecting an identity built around facilitating successful transitions into image-based and procedural specialties. Filling every year since the 1970s, it values applicants with a clear, already-secured or targeted advanced specialty match, not general clinical exploration.
