This Transitional Year program at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, sponsored jointly with the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell General Surgery and Internal Medicine Residency Programs, functions primarily as a structured launch pad into advanced specialty training rather than a terminal clinical year. Residents rotate monthly through general surgery, internal medicine, emergency medicine, ambulatory care and electives, with schedules individually customized to the requirements of each resident's matched PGY2 program. The program's defining structural feature is its tight partnership with Anesthesiology and Neurology, which reserve 11 of the 15 intern positions for their own PGY2/CA-1 candidates, making it functionally an intern year built around procedural and neuro-oriented specialties. Scholarly activity is required of every resident (abstract, QI project, or publication) but framed as a structured requirement rather than a research-intensity identity, and the emphasis throughout is on smooth handoff, wellness, and preparation for a specific advanced specialty rather than broad career exploration.
