Program Identity & Fit

This is a one-year Transitional Year program based at Intermountain Medical Center, a tertiary/quaternary flagship hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center in Murray, UT, with sponsor affiliation to the University of Utah's internal medicine and surgery residencies. The curriculum is explicitly structured around preparing interns for procedurally- or image-oriented specialties (anesthesiology, radiology, radiation oncology, dermatology, PM&R), with rotations spanning internal medicine, ED, ambulatory clinic, general surgery, critical care, and community health, plus four to five months of elective/selective time to tailor exposure toward the intern's ultimate specialty. Residents work alongside University of Utah categorical residents rather than a separate TY-only cohort, situating them within a high-acuity academic-community hybrid environment (80,000+ annual ED visits). The program's identity is transitional/preparatory rather than research- or primary-care-driven, valuing residents who already know their next specialty and want a broad, flexible foundation year rather than a defined career track of its own.
