Program Identity & Fit

Northwest Healthcare's Transitional Year program is a newly accredited, community-based year built around a 300-bed acute care hospital in Tucson, training alongside the sister Internal Medicine residency and offering broad exposure across inpatient medicine, critical care, surgery, emergency medicine, and outpatient clinics housed within a compact campus. The thirteen-block curriculum emphasizes foundational clinical skills for residents heading into any specialty, with five elective blocks tailored to individual career goals (including radiology, procedural subspecialties, and surgical fields) and structured support for Step 3/Level 3 preparation. As an inaugural-era program still building its identity, it explicitly seeks residents willing to take on leadership roles and help shape the program's culture and academic structure rather than simply pass through a pre-established system. Research is present via collaboration with the internal medicine program but is not positioned as a defining feature; the program's orientation is toward flexible preparation for advanced training in a chosen specialty.
