Program Identity & Fit

This is a small, community-based Transitional Year program (four positions annually) at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery, a 146-bed acute-care facility in Blacksburg, VA, functioning primarily as a clinical base year for advanced specialties such as anesthesiology, dermatology, radiology, neurology, PM&R, and radiation oncology. Its identity is shaped by a VCOM osteopathic affiliation and a broader HCA Healthcare consortium co-located with Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Dermatology, Sports Medicine, and ONMM programs, enabling interdisciplinary teaching and shared didactics, including grand rounds transmitted from the Salem VA Medical Center. Rotations span internal medicine, ICU, surgery, women's health/pediatrics, ER, and outpatient family medicine, with broad but supervised exposure rather than depth in any one discipline, and only one month permitted for non-clinical scholarly pursuits, reflecting a program built to prepare residents for a specific advanced specialty rather than to cultivate independent research careers. The program explicitly values individual resident development, well-being, and career transition support, positioning itself as a launching pad rather than a terminal training experience.
