Program Identity & Fit

This is a small, community-based Transitional Year program (11 PGY1 residents) at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital, structured explicitly as a clinical-base-year vehicle rather than a specialty-track destination. The 13-block curriculum satisfies ACGME fundamental-clinical-skills requirements through ICU, emergency department, internal medicine, family medicine and ambulatory surgery rotations, with residents integrated alongside internal medicine categorical residents and a dedicated block split between research and quality improvement. The program director works one-on-one with each resident to tailor requirements to their chosen advanced specialty, signaling an institutional orientation toward serving as a launching pad into other residencies (commonly emergency medicine, radiology, dermatology, anesthesiology, PM&R) rather than an endpoint in itself. As part of the large HCA Healthcare GME network, residents have access to system-wide research infrastructure, but the program's own emphasis is on breadth of core clinical exposure and smooth progression to the resident's ultimate specialty.
