Program Identity & Fit

This is an integrated six-year (I-6) cardiothoracic surgery program built around a tertiary academic hub (UCMC), a high-volume community cardiac center (The Christ Hospital) with a distinctive robotic and transcatheter (TAVR/TEVAR) caseload, and Cincinnati Children's Hospital, a nationally recognized congenital heart program with the world's most extensive pediatric tracheal reconstruction experience. Training emphasizes minimally-invasive and advanced technical modalities across adult cardiac, general thoracic, and congenital surgery, with structured rotations in echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, and interventional pulmonology to build well-rounded, independent cardiothoracic surgeons. Clinical research is embedded through large prospective outcomes databases (lung cancer, esophageal cancer, lung cancer screening) and the multidisciplinary CROSS outcomes/disparities research group, with funded national meeting attendance for residents who present work. The program's onward congenital cardiac fellowship and its breadth of subspecialty rotations signal an orientation toward producing technically comprehensive cardiothoracic surgeons rather than narrowly focused practitioners.
