Program Identity & Fit

This is a new, inaugural five-year categorical general surgery program (3 positions/year) at HCA Healthcare's Chippenham & Johnston-Willis Hospitals, a community-based sponsoring institution in Richmond, VA recognized as a top-100 Healthgrades hospital. As part of the large HCA Healthcare GME network, residents have access to system-wide research infrastructure (30+ million annual patient encounters, national research coordinators, HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine) and a formalized wellness/well-being framework built around autonomy, belonging, and competence. The program emphasizes clinical volume and mentorship from board-certified community surgeon faculty rather than a named academic research track, positioning itself as a comprehensive clinical training ground for well-rounded general surgeons rather than a subspecialty pipeline. Being an inaugural class, it explicitly frames resident input as shaping the program's structure and culture going forward.
