DMC/Wayne State's General Surgery Residency is a large, multi-hospital academic program anchored by the country's biggest single-campus medical school, spanning a Level I trauma/burn center (Detroit Receiving), an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center (Karmanos), a VA, pediatric and transplant services, and community-model sites (St. Mary, Mercy Health Muskegon) that expose residents to both large resident-team trauma services and preceptor-based private-practice rotations. The safety-net, high-acuity Detroit population drives heavy volume in trauma/acute care surgery, burns, surgical oncology, and transplant, while affiliated engineering (SSIM) and basic-science labs (breast cancer biology, CAR-T/NK immunotherapy) give residents access to translational and bioengineering research alongside clinical outcomes work. Research is structurally embedded (PGY-2 project requirement, dedicated lab partnerships) but the program explicitly frames graduates as prepared for both direct general surgery practice and fellowship training, reflecting a broad-based, service-diverse identity rather than a narrow academic pipeline.
