Program Identity & Fit

This is a university-based academic diagnostic radiology residency anchored at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, a 639-bed Level I trauma center and tertiary/quaternary academic medical center serving as the flagship cancer hospital of Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, recently expanded through integration with Rutgers Health/Monmouth Medical Center to broaden faculty subspecialization, case volume, and community hospital experience. The curriculum is comprehensive and subspecialty-driven, with core rotations spanning body, neuro, MSK, breast, pediatric, cardiothoracic, nuclear medicine and IR, structured board preparation (AIRP attendance, dedicated Core exam review from March of PGY3), and named advanced pathways including three Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) slots, a Nuclear Radiology/Diagnostic Radiology combined pathway, and a new ABR Pediatric Radiology subspecialty certification track. Research is explicitly stated as important to the program's mission, with residents mentored to present at RSNA, AUR, SIR, SNMMI and ASNR meetings and a mandatory resident QI project, though the primary orientation is toward comprehensive clinical training and fellowship preparation rather than a physician-scientist track. The program values residents who contribute to a collaborative, teaching-oriented culture (near-peer mentoring of juniors and medical students), pursue named subspecialty pathways, and engage with regional/national radiology societies (SRSNJ, ACR).
