Program Identity & Fit

This is a university-affiliated community residency, jointly sponsored by Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and RWJBarnabas Health, based at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (665-bed teaching hospital) with supplemental rotations at University Hospital Newark and Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. The program's defining feature is its Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) pathway, accredited for one resident per class, supported by a fellowship-trained IR faculty offering high procedural volume (500+ IR procedures required) spanning interventional oncology, dialysis access, embolization and trauma-driven emergent cases tied to a busy safety-net emergency department. Pediatric radiology exposure is reinforced by the on-site Children's Hospital of New Jersey (PICU, NICU, pediatric ED), and residents participate in national scholarly activity (ARRS, RSNA, CAR) with an established track record of resident publications and presentations. The program values residents who combine procedural interest and clinical engagement in an underserved, high-acuity population with academic productivity, rather than pure bench research.
