UAB Psychiatry is a large academic program anchored in a major tertiary/quaternary referral medical center, offering residents exposure across the full acuity spectrum—from UAB Hospital's tertiary psychiatric inpatient units to the university-owned Community Psychiatry Program serving chronically severely mentally ill patients (including an Assertive Community Treatment/REACT team), the Birmingham VA, Children's of Alabama, the 1917 HIV Clinic, and the Beacon Recovery substance-use program. Research is structurally embedded through the STEPP Residency Research Track, a dedicated NRMP-coded pathway with protected time, individualized mentoring, and access to over 80 core research facilities and 26 interdisciplinary research centers, signaling a genuine physician-scientist pipeline rather than a token research elective. The program supports subspecialization in-house via Child and Adolescent, Consultation-Liaison, and Geriatric Psychiatry fellowships, and resident interests documented on the site skew heavily toward inpatient, emergency, CL, addiction, and CAP subspecialties alongside a smaller research-track cohort. The program values residents who can navigate a high-volume, high-acuity, safety-net-adjacent public psychiatric system while also accommodating those pursuing focused academic/research trajectories through its formal track structure.
