Program Identity & Fit

Summa Health/NEOMED is a community-based, university-affiliated psychiatry residency that trains residents across an unusually broad continuum of care settings, including inpatient psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, the Portage County Jail, psychiatric emergency services, community support agencies, and an Integrated Medicine Clinic, reflecting a strong public/community mental health and correctional psychiatry orientation. Curriculum design emphasizes psychotherapy competency alongside pharmacotherapy, with protected longitudinal outpatient psychotherapy experience running from PGY-2 through PGY-4 and structured, protected didactic time. Research exists as an expected scholarly component (residents present research annually) supported by institutional infrastructure (DISCOVER Center, Translational Research Center, IRB), but the program's identity centers on producing broadly competent general psychiatrists comfortable across inpatient, outpatient, emergency, correctional, and community settings rather than subspecialty or academic researchers. The program values residents who can function with increasing autonomy across underserved and safety-net populations, including justice-involved and severely mentally ill patients, and who value the doctor-patient relationship and psychotherapeutic skill as much as psychopharmacology.
