Program Identity & Fit

The University of Minnesota Pediatric Residency is a university-affiliated academic program built around a three-year, age-based block curriculum (infant/early childhood, school-age, adolescence) delivered across multiple hospital sites including M Health Fairview Masonic Children's Hospital and Children's Minnesota. Its identity is shaped by distinct named pathways layered onto the categorical track: a Physician Scientist Training Pathway (IRP/ARP options, protected research time, dedicated mentorship and funding through fellowship), a Rural Pediatrics Primary Care Track, a Global Pediatrics Track with domestic (Native American, immigrant/refugee) and international elective sites, and a Child Neurology Residency. Research infrastructure is substantial and visible through department-wide efforts (PRESS symposium, P-QUAD incentive program, protected research electives, conference stipends), while community and advocacy engagement runs deep, evidenced by labs focused on youth homelessness, incarcerated parents and children, and community-engaged research methodology. The program appears to value residents who can commit early to a defined career trajectory—physician-scientist, rural generalist, or global/underserved health—rather than a single undifferentiated training path.
