Program Identity & Fit

KU Wichita Pediatrics is a small, community-based program affiliated with KU School of Medicine and anchored at Wesley Children's Hospital, the only children's hospital serving central/western Kansas, drawing a wide rural and underserved catchment area. The program uses an X+Y block schedule (four-week immersive rotations plus two-week longitudinal blocks) designed to reduce task-switching and build resident-patient continuity, and residents describe direct, fellow-like attending interaction on subspecialty rotations such as NICU. Graduate outcomes split fairly evenly between general/community pediatrics (often locally in Wichita and smaller Kansas towns) and subspecialty fellowships (neonatology, critical care, GI, hematology-oncology, cardiology), with scholarly output concentrated in ambulatory quality-improvement and clinical research rather than bench science. The program repeatedly emphasizes a small, tight-knit, family-like culture with high faculty accessibility, valuing residents who fit into a supportive, low-hierarchy community environment.
