UIC Pediatrics is an urban, university-based program anchored at the Children's Hospital at UI Health, a tertiary referral center where over 70% of patients carry Medicaid, giving residents heavy exposure to complex chronic disease and underserved, safety-net populations. Training is broadened through inpatient rotations at Lurie Children's Hospital and elective options at Advocate Children's Hospital, Cook County Stroger, University of Chicago, and Shriners, reflecting a deliberate emphasis on educational diversity across Chicago's health systems. The program structures individualized career development through five formal tracks (advocacy, global health, hospital medicine, research, medical education) and supports scholarship via mentored research, travel awards, a tuition-waived Clinical Research Methods certificate, and access to the NIH-funded CCTS, indicating that research and advocacy are institutionally embedded rather than incidental.
