The University of Hawaii Pediatric Residency is a university-affiliated, community-based program anchored at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, the sole tertiary/quaternary pediatric referral center for the entire Pacific Basin, giving residents exposure to high-acuity NICU/PICU care alongside common and tropical pediatric disease in a uniquely multiethnic, multilingual population drawn from Hawaii, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Continuity clinics span a hospital-based clinic, a primary-care-focused community hospital clinic, and a federally qualified community health center serving a largely Pacific Islander/Asian immigrant population, reflecting a strong underserved and community-health orientation reinforced by a dedicated Global Health curriculum with rotations in Laos, American Samoa, and South Pacific outreach missions. Scholarly activity is structured but flexible (case reports, QI/advocacy projects, chart review) rather than hypothesis-driven bench research, with a culminating research day and IEU (Individualized Educational Unit) blocks that let residents tailor 21 weeks of elective time toward general pediatrics, subspecialty exposure, global health, or advocacy career paths. The program's emphasis on continuity, cultural humility, interpreter-based care, and advocacy/community involvement suggests it values residents drawn to underserved, cross-cultural, and community-oriented pediatric practice over pure subspecialty academic research tracks.
