This is a university-based academic pediatrics program anchored at Diamond Children's/Banner-University Medical Center Tucson, distinguished by its border-region location and mission to serve immigrant, refugee, tribal, rural and Spanish-speaking pediatric populations across southern Arizona. The program is backed by the Steele Children's Research Center and Cracchiolo Institute, giving residents access to active physician-scientist-led investigation in autoimmune disease, neonatology/NEC, pediatric autoimmune encephalopathy (PANS/PANDAS) and oncology, with residents expected to engage in scholarly/QI projects from the start. Career preparation is dual-track: a strong fellowship placement record at competitive subspecialty programs alongside explicit preparation of primary-care-bound residents for urban, rural and international practice, supported by named pathways such as the Spanish Language Health Care Disparities Distinction Track, ArizonaLEND, and funded global/rural health electives. The program values residents drawn to underserved and cross-border health equity work, community-oriented ambulatory training (including community private-practice continuity clinic options), and structured wellness/mentorship over a purely tertiary-referral, high-volume subspecialty identity.
