Program Identity & Fit

Marshfield Clinic's Pediatrics Residency is a university-affiliated (UW SOM&PH academic campus), community-based tertiary program housed in a dedicated "hospital within a hospital" children's hospital, drawing a referral base of 3 million across northern/central Wisconsin and the Upper Michigan peninsula. The absence of pediatric subspecialty fellows means residents get unmediated one-on-one procedural access to subspecialists (NICU, PICU, heme-onc) under a 4:1 faculty-to-resident ratio, while a robust weekly continuity clinic builds a genuine longitudinal primary-care panel. Research is structurally supported rather than central to identity - a dedicated research facilitator and the large Marshfield Clinic Research Institute back QI, case reports and clinical projects - and the program explicitly frames itself as preparing residents for both community primary care and competitive subspecialty fellowships (recent placements at Mayo, UCSD, Tufts). The program values well-rounded, self-directed learners suited to a small-town, low-volume-competition training environment where autonomy and continuity substitute for big-city scale.
