Program Identity & Fit

OHSU is Oregon's only academic health center pathology program, offering a four-year AP/CP residency (four residents/year, 16 total) plus an every-other-year integrated AP/NP pathway that compresses neuropathology board eligibility into four years. Training spans five sites - OHSU, the VA, Kaiser Regional Laboratory, the medical examiner's office and the American Red Cross - giving residents academic, community, forensic and government-laboratory exposure alongside high-volume FNA and molecular diagnostics work through the Knight Diagnostic Laboratories. Scholarly activity is a structural expectation (mandatory annual grand rounds presentation, funded conference travel), backed by active departmental research in cancer biology, neurodegeneration, computational/AI pathology and the Oregon Brain Bank, and by seven fellowship pathways that make in-house subspecialization a defined next step. The program explicitly frames itself as preparing residents for community practice, fellowship subspecialization, or academic careers alike, valuing diagnostic autonomy (first call in AP/CP), protected daily didactic time, and close longitudinal faculty mentorship in a comparatively small, collegial department.
