Program Identity & Fit

This is a five-year, four-resident-per-year academic otolaryngology program housed within University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University, combining full-spectrum adult and pediatric ENT training with a structured, mentored research curriculum. Research is deeply embedded rather than optional: residents write a CORE-style grant culminating before their PGY3 research rotation, engage with dedicated task forces for quality improvement and clinical effectiveness, and can pursue certification in Lean Six Sigma and IHI quality methodology. The department supports a substantial extramural research pipeline (including a dedicated clinical research fellowship for pre-residency applicants and active IRB portfolio with over 100 studies) and funds resident attendance at national meetings in PGY3 and PGY5. Distinctive structural features include a resident-led ENT Boot Camp for incoming PGY1/PGY2s emphasizing emergency and procedural simulation, more than 14 hands-on skills workshops, and explicit institutional acknowledgment that graduates pursue both academic and private practice careers.
