Program Identity & Fit

This is a fully academic, university-based ophthalmology program staffed exclusively by full-time academic faculty across three northern New Jersey sites (University Hospital Newark, VA Medical Center East Orange, and Jersey City Medical Center), giving residents broad exposure to safety-net, veteran, and community populations. A defining structural feature is the absence of fellows: residents serve as primary surgeon or first assistant in all surgical cases, producing surgical volume the program states ranks in the top 10% nationally across many subspecialties, with all didactics and surgeries directly attended-supervised. The program pairs ophthalmology training with a joint PGY1 internal medicine internship (three months of early ophthalmic exposure across subspecialty clinics, consults, and ED), reflecting a deliberate early-immersion structure. Research is supported and integrated but the explicit institutional emphasis is on maximizing hands-on surgical autonomy and clinical training volume rather than positioning residents toward fellowship subspecialization.
