Program Identity & Fit

This is the only ophthalmology residency in Queens, a three-year ACGME-accredited program at Jamaica Hospital (a Level I Trauma Center) affiliated with New York Medical College, built around a high-volume, procedurally rich clinical experience. Training spans multiple New York City sites beyond the home institution, including rotations at the Mackool Eye Institute for anterior segment surgery, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary for vitreoretinal surgery, the Helen Keller Institute for low vision, and with ocular oncologist Dr. Paul Finger, giving residents unusually broad exposure to subspecialty surgical volume through external partnerships rather than solely in-house faculty. The program funds attendance at the AAO annual meeting and the Wills Eye review course, and structures a preliminary year through an integrated internal medicine internship at Flushing Hospital, with early and progressively independent call and surgical responsibility (lasers, injections, then cataract/glaucoma surgery by PGY4). While research participation and presentation at national meetings is encouraged, the program's stated goal centers on producing residents ready for either subspecialty fellowship or comprehensive ophthalmology practice, with surgical/procedural competency and multi-site clinical exposure as the core identity.
