NYEE/Icahn Mount Sinai is the largest ophthalmology residency in the country, formed by merging two established programs into a 10-resident-per-year training pathway anchored at America's oldest specialty hospital. Training spans every ophthalmic subspecialty with dedicated resident-run clinics, substantial surgical autonomy (senior residents average 12 scleral buckles, 14 vitrectomies, and four cryopexies; juniors perform ~100 fluorescein angiograms and 130 laser treatments), and rotations across diverse sites including Mount Sinai Morningside, Mount Sinai West, Elmhurst, and the Bronx VA. Research is deeply embedded through the Einhorn Clinical Research Center and the newer Barry Family Center for Ophthalmic Artificial Intelligence, with residents encouraged to generate manuscripts from clinical cases and participate in active investigational protocols across retina, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, and AI-driven diagnostics. The program explicitly prepares graduates for multiple pathways—fellowship subspecialization, comprehensive private practice, academic medicine, or global health—reflecting a broad institutional identity rooted in high surgical volume, subspecialty depth, and a long-standing charitable/community-service mission.
