Spartanburg Medical Center's new OB/GYN residency (inaugural class 2025, second cohort entering 2026) is an academic-community hybrid program built explicitly around a mission of expanding access to maternal and gynecologic care for an underinsured population in a "maternity care desert" region of upstate South Carolina. The single-site training environment offers substantial clinical volume (nearly 3,900 deliveries, over 1,200 cesareans, 780 hysterectomies with majority robotic approach) and a generalist-apprentice model in PGY-3/4 pairing residents with faculty across the full scope of office, surgical, and obstetric practice. The curriculum emphasizes individualized, competency-based, application-driven learning (including a dedicated "WIN" elective block) over traditional lecture format, with only a modest 4-week dedicated research rotation reflecting a clinical-service and community-health orientation rather than a research-driven identity. As a brand-new program still establishing its culture, it appears to value residents who are adaptable, community-minded, and drawn to building something new rather than following an established track.
