Program Identity & Fit

Newark Beth Israel Medical Center's OB/GYN residency is a community-based, Rutgers-affiliated program that explicitly frames its mission as producing "strong generalists" who serve an urban, underserved central/northern New Jersey population, blending primary and tertiary obstetric-gynecologic care. Clinical training spans a busy Labor & Delivery unit (11 LDRs, dedicated OR suites), an OB/GYN ultrasound lab with 3D/4D capability, an active midwifery service, and subspecialty rotations in MFM, REI, Urogynecology and GYN Oncology, with progressive resident autonomy building toward chief-level responsibility in PGY4. Research is present but modestly scaled - a single PGY4 research project requirement and exposure to robotics/managed care - rather than a driving institutional focus, and outcomes show most graduates entering community practice with only occasional fellowship placement (Urogynecology, MFM). The program appears to value residents comfortable balancing high-acuity tertiary care with the social complexity of a diverse, underserved urban population, within a structured, generalist-oriented curriculum.
