Kaiser Permanente Oakland is a large, university-adjacent community-academic OB/GYN program embedded within an integrated health system, serving the ethnically diverse East Bay population and explicitly centering health equity, reproductive justice, and recruitment/retention of underrepresented-in-medicine physicians in its mission. The clinical environment is subspecialty-rich (MFM, GYN-ONC, Urogynecology, REI, Complex Family Planning, Minimally Invasive Surgery) with 70+ faculty, a dedicated complex family planning/abortion training pathway, a pioneering multidisciplinary transgender health program (including a pediatric PROUD clinic), and a regional fetal/placental pathology referral role, giving residents unusually broad subspecialty exposure for a community-based site. The curriculum builds a structured but resident-directed research requirement (culminating in a joint Bay Area OB/GYN symposium), heavy simulation/robotics training, and flexible PGY3 elective time explicitly used for fellowship exploration, international rotations, or focused scholarly work, reflecting a program designed to prepare graduates equally for generalist practice or subspecialty fellowship. The program values residents who engage in teaching (hosting UCSF's longitudinal clerkship and sub-interns), pursue individualized scholarly or advocacy projects, and demonstrate commitment to underserved and marginalized populations, including transgender and Spanish-speaking communities.
