Program Identity & Fit

This is an inaugural neurology residency at the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University (formerly EVMS), built on a hospital-based clinical framework at Sentara Norfolk General (Level I trauma, Comprehensive Stroke Center, Level IV Comprehensive Epilepsy Center) and Sentara CarePlex, with additional outpatient exposure at Sentara Princess Anne. The program emphasizes deep clinical immersion across stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, neurocritical care and neurophysiology, with residents assuming chief-level vascular responsibility during a dedicated fourth-year rotation, and early hands-on exposure to EEG, EMG and lumbar puncture. Faculty research and the university's expanding research infrastructure are described as supportive of clinical neuroscience training, though the program's identity centers more on graduated clinical autonomy and interdisciplinary collaboration with neurosurgery, psychiatry and internal medicine than on producing physician-scientists. As a new program, it appears to value residents comfortable helping shape culture and workflow in a still-forming academic-community hybrid environment.
